The environment and animal welfare

To grow organic food we don't use

  • Chemical pesticides.
  • Artificial fertilizers or sewage sludge.
  • GMOS.
  • Overcrowding in buildings and outdoor time for animals.

These production methods protect the environment, animals and farmers. On the downside, it's difficult to control water and pollen contamination of organic crops. So consumers may not be paying for what they really want.

Organic foods do not contain

  • Growth hormones (normally used in veal and beef breeding)
  • Antibiotics in preventive doses (if the animal is sick, it will be quarantined)
  • Animal meal
  • Chemical colorants, artificial flavors or synthetic additives
  • Preservatives and irradiation for conservation

Organic and conventional produce are fairly comparable from a nutritional point of view, but there can be a big difference in taste.

Organic farming does, however, seem to reduce exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria (which our stomach acid can't digest) and pesticides.
